Henry Cooper

On This Day George (boxing under the name Jim) and Henry Cooper from the Evening Standard Paper. They had not long turned pro following completion of their national service. Henry had won the ABA Light Heavyweight Title for the Army in 1953 and also the year before with Eltham and District ABC. Our Enry' (on the right) was fighting at Manor Place Baths the following week.

He went on to achieve in the squared circle:

  • Outright winner of three Lonsdale Belts (1961, 1965, 1970)
  • British Boxing Board of Control Heavyweight Champion (1959-1971)
  • Commonwealth (British Empire) Heavyweight Championship (1959-1971)
  • European Boxing Union Heavyweight Champion (1964, 1968-1969)
